Scholarships & Contests

This page is under construction.

Bard College students interested in a competitive internship opportunity or seeking to submit papers for publication in our forthcoming journal should check out this informational flyer.

As you probably know by now, Robert Goodis is currently enrolled in a private college in upstate New York.  Bard College, like most other private schools, is not cheap.

I know the troubles of trying to pay for college all-too-well.  Scholarships are not easy to come-by, and you often have no way of knowing what you are getting yourself into just by filling out a form online.  While I continue to search for scholarships, myself, I will be posting trustworthy resources here, on the Scholarships & Contests page.  If you would like to share other resources, please use the Contact Robert form, available through the navigation panel on the left.

As a college student, I cannot realistically provide independent scholarships and contests at this time.  With the help of sponsors and partners, however, this site will eventually develop some programs of its own.  Please continue to check this page for updates and new scholarships and contests.  If you would like to sponsor a scholarship or contest, please use that same contact form.

Some quick notes on scholarships:

  1. You should never have to pay a fee to apply for a scholarship.  (Contests, maybe.  Scholarships, no.)  Generally speaking, any so-called scholarship that charges an application fee is a scam.  Do not fall victim to these tricks.
  2. Many online scholarships will ask you to complete surveys, indicating your interest in this sponsor or that sponsor, this product idea or that one.  While these can be legitimate scholarship opportunities, they are often not an effective use of time (and many result in a significant increase of spam to your email inbox).
  3. The most reliable scholarships are still good old-fashioned essay competitions.  Academic contests, such as science fairs, Quiz-Bowls, and others are also great resources for any student - and they look good on a résumé.
  4. For more information on how to save time and avoid scams, please visit our partner: the ScholarshipExperts.com.  They offer a comprehensive list of scholarships, as well as important information for both U.S. and international students.

Contest:

Develop a feasible merchandise and/or marketing plan for the up-and-coming RobertGoodis|Foundation.  Come up with something unique, and original, and relevant to the mission of this website.

As an example, consider the Save Darfur Yarmulke (aka Save Darfur Kippot).  The idea for this highly effective fundraiser came to Robert while he was driving home from religious services one evening.  Upon thinking of yarmulkes imprinted "Save Darfur" and realizing how much he desired one, it was just a logical step to believe others would have the same desire.  The kippot have caught on, and raised thousands of dollars for Darfur relief and advocacy programs.

All serious applications will be considered.  The winner may choose one of two grand prizes: a $50 gift certificate for RobertGoodis|Foundation's shop, or $15 cash.  The grand prize will also include, if available within a reasonable amount of time, a prototype of their idea (unless it is web-based, of course) and a certificate to show his/her success.

Two runner-ups will each receive a $10 gift certificate for the RG store and a simple certificate of success.

Have more than one great idea?  Enter the contest as many times as you like (your entries will count as a maximum of 2 out of the 25 total that will be accepted, but the more ideas you submit, the better your chances are at having the winning idea).  Encourage your friends to apply to speed-up the selection process.

Contest will end:
   a.  when 25 reasonable entries are received -or-
   b.  on June 1st, 2009
whichever comes first.  The contest may be extended pending more entries if fewer than 15 are received by the June 1st deadline.

Odds of winning: Grand Prize (1:25 or better); runner up (2:25 or better).  Upon submission, you agree that your ideas (even ones that do not win) will become legal property of Robert Goodis and RobertGoodis|Foundation, and that all rights will be forfeited to the website, including but not limited to any potential or real financial gains from said idea.

To enter, use the form located on the contact Robert page.

While we are in the process of developing more scholarships and contests here at RobertGoodis|Foundation, please feel free to check out some great opportunities from our partners.

Not everybody gets a scholarship, but that doesn't mean you should give up.  Keep looking, and in the meanwhile at least try to save some money while you're in school.  One good way is to buy used textbooks at a fraction of the cost of new ones, and to resell your textbooks when you're done using them.  Try visiting textbookx.com to do just that.
